Using the gold-medal winning Classic Rum as a base, the distillers of The African Spirit Distillery crafted an incredibly tempting Spirit Aperitif by adding PRECIOUS ORGANIC MADAGASCAN VANILLA PODS.
The vanilla pods are liquid infused in the Classic Rum for up to six months. This process, along with the addition of a sugar, creates the delightful sweet flavour of our Madagascan Vanilla Spirit Aperitif. Finally, we cannot fail to mention the natural golden shade the vanilla lends to the product: a colour as bright as the AFRICAN SUNSET!

The African Spirit Distillery’s story is steeped in enchantment and tradition. It all began with the whimsical alchemist Oupa Joe, whose playful experiments with distillation laid the foundation for a unique family business. Established in 2016 in Boksburg, this distillery carries forward the innovative spirit of its forefather.
Oupa Joe and his friend Jan’s legendary creation of apricot moonshine set the stage for what would become a vibrant distillery. Today, the Steyn family continues this legacy by blending age-old techniques with modern expertise. Guided by Fritz Steyn, Snr., his sons Jan-Harm and Fritz Jr., and his son-in-law Frans, the distillery has evolved into a beacon of quality and creativity.
Jan-Harm, inspired by the legend, began distilling on a small scale with rudimentary equipment. Despite initial challenges, his curiosity and innate talent led to impressive early results. Fritz Jr. and Frans shared this passion, pursuing extensive training and courses in distillation. Their dedication has resulted in exceptional spirits that reflect the essence of Africa.
Completed in 2018, the distillery seamlessly blends elegance with a distinct African style. Housed in the original centennial building (once a farmhouse), it now hosts state-of-the-art distillation facilities, a professional kitchen, and a well-stocked cocktail bar. The renovations preserved elements of the original structure, such as the South African pressed ceiling and repurposed wood, marrying tradition with innovation.
The distillery’s range of spirits includes Classic Rum, Classic Gin, Rosa Rum, Qing Rum, and Rubi Rum. Crafted from high-quality African molasses and organic botanicals, each product undergoes meticulous distillation to create unique flavorflavour profiles that capture the spirit of Africa.
