All about our gin

Porkbush Gin was established in 2019 with the sole purpose of creating awareness around South Africa’s own wonder plant, the Spekboom and to make SPEKtacular gin in the process. Until recently, Porkbush Gin supported Wonder Plant, a social enterprise, working towards fighting climate change and empowering disadvantaged individuals. In 2019/2020, Wonder Plant started with the Great Labyrinth of Africa project and Porkbush Gin agreed to contribute R10 per bottle sold to this amazing project, however, due to Covid, all sponsors withdrew and unfortunately Wonder Plant as well as the Great Labyrinth of Africa project came to an end. This also meant that a very big part of the story behind our brand came to an unfortunate end. Porkbush Gin is currently still on the outlook for any other Spekboom initiatives to support.

How it's made

Porkbush is a distilled gin, not a compound or bathtub gin. Porkbush is made from re-distilled neutral spirits (pure ethanol at 96.4% ABV). The spekboom is macerated in neutral spirits and distilled separately at a lower temperature, as not to destroy the delicate essential oils. The other botanicals (juniper berries from the Balkans, Bulgaria and Italy, coriander, cubeb and lemon) are vapour-infused during distillation in the gin head of the column still. The distillates are then combined during proofing. No sugar is added to Porkbush as it is a perfectly dry gin. Distilled to perfection by Still 33 Distillery

Spekboom, also known as Pork Bush or Elephant’s food, is South Africa’s own indigenous wonder plant. Besides being edible (and high in Vitamin C), the medium-sized shrub found predominantly in the Eastern Cape, is resilient and an important ‘weapon’ in the fight against climate change. This carbon sponge can absorb more than 4 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year per hectare of trees planted, making it more effective than the Amazon rainforest at sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
