The perfect yeasts to kick-start the molasses ferments were selected over a period of several months to ensure that the rum has a unique balance of richness, depth and sweetness. OMH rum is double distilled on a bespoke copper pot still and only the most flavoursome parts of the hearts make it into the bottles, resulting in a slightly butterscotch taste, perfect for a mojito or paired with a berry tonic.
All rums start as white rum and can then be rested in barrels, spiced or flavoured. OMH Spiced Rum is always made with whole, natural ingredients and never with synthetic “natural” flavourings or colourings. This allows the rich flavours and undertones of the rum to shine through without being disguised or covered up. Pairs perfectly with ginger beer and a lime or orange wedge.
OMH Golden Rum is rested in Virgin American Oak barrels which results in beautifully golden and delicately flavoured rum. No colourings are added- the only flavour and colour is a direct result of the barrel and time. Best enjoyed neat or with a splash of soda water.
Smoky Oak is the first flavour that OMH created and as such, holds a special place in their hearts. The depth of the rum combined with a unique smokiness usually only found in whisky creates the perfect blend of flavours. This is a classic and as such is best sipped neat over ice.
Old Mother Hunt Rum was born out of passion, hope and a liberal dose of desperation. Husband and wife team, Matt and Becky, launched their micro rum distillery in November 2020 after Matt lost his job as an airline Captain at the beginning of the pandemic. With two young children at home and a collapsing economy, they quickly realised they would have to create their own future and employment.
After spending a considerable amount of time visiting other distilleries and learning the processes, they discovered a gap in the market for a British Rum, distilled from scratch right here in the UK, with no sugar or chemical flavourings added. As such, they have created a sophisticated brand using only whole, natural ingredients, perfect for experienced rum drinkers and converted gin drinkers alike –all without a pirate in sight!
They quickly fell in love with the distillation and production of rum and realised that they had found a new passion. The couple have a strong ethos about keeping the business authentic and honest, and so between them, they are responsible for the whole process, from logo and website design and marketing to hand bottling and labelling every batch.
