Black Fox Farm and Distillery was started by John Cote and Barb Stefanyshyn-Cote in 2015, with the intent of connecting people to agriculture. Located just outside of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in the heart of the Canadian prairies, Black Fox is now among the country’s most well-known and well-respected craft distilleries. Acres of fresh fruit, flowers, and grains are harvested and distilled into whisky, gin, and liqueurs that tell a story of terroir and commitment to excellence.
By using their agricultural expertise, Barb and John can not only ensure that the highest quality ingredients are used, but also that they are grown using the most sustainable methods available, where every activity is planned in a way that is best for the land, as well as the people that work it. From ingredient production to distillation, transportation, packaging, and water conservation, our agronomic practices emphasize environmental stewardship and a love of the land. As its current custodians, we take seriously our responsibility to leave it better than when it came into our care.
The name was inspired from the couple’s previous grain farm, where a black fox lived and played around the farmyard for a summer. Red foxes are a common sight to see around the world; a black fox is a member of the same family, but with a rare colour variation, which is unexpected and impossible to ignore. The organization is built on the same concept, something so familiar, yet entirely unique.
