About us

Reviving Suriname's Hidden Spirits:
A Journey Through Time, Wood, and Passion

The story of Tabiki Rum began not in a corporate boardroom, but during the quiet quietude of global lockdowns, where two friends shared a deep passion for distilled spirits and a profound respect for Suriname’s natural heritage. Driven by curiosity about their nation’s ancestral spirit production, their archival research led to an extraordinary discovery: a handwritten, 19th-century recipe detailing traditional Surinamese rum-making methods. This remarkable find catalyzed the creation of Spirits of the Amazon, a company founded with the explicit mission to revive a forgotten liquid legacy and reconnect discerning drinkers with the living heart of the rainforest.
Long before modern industrial production standardized oak barrel aging across the globe, early Surinamese rum was matured and transported in vessels carved from local rainforest timber. Tabiki Rum faithfully resurrects this authentic, historic technique by aging its base spirit exclusively with a unique species of indigenous Amazonian wood. This rare wood naturally yields sophisticated organoleptic profiles featuring robust espresso, bittersweet dark chocolate, and delicate baking spices, achieved entirely without oak, added sugars, artificial dyes, or flavor enhancers. To finalize this sacred liquid, we dilute the spirit using crystalline water drawn from the ancient, silicate-filtered Zanderij aquifer, imparting a silky smoothness that tempers the spirit’s natural warmth.
Our brand name ‘Tabiki’ honors Diitabiki, the historic capital and spiritual sanctuary of the Maroon Ndyuka community nestled along the Tapanahony River. It celebrates the enduring freedom, ecological wisdom, and unbreakable spirit of ancestral communities who forged a life in harmony with the wild jungle. Operating from our boutique center at the House of Tabiki in downtown Paramaribo, we produce exclusively in limited, numbered micro-batches. Every single bottle represents our commitment to absolute purity, historical reverence, and sustainable craft, inviting spirit lovers worldwide to embark on an unforgettable sensory journey into Amazonian heritage.
